Surgery remains the corner stone treatment in cancer. It not only helps in complete extirpation of cancer but also provides comprehensive staging information. Surgery can be done either by conventional open techniques or it can be done via minimally invasive technique also known as the key hole surgery.
Radiotherapy is treatment given by modified X-ray like beams. With the advent of LINAC (newer version machine for radiotherapy) and techniques like IMRT, IGRT and VMAT one can give highly precise therapy to tumor with negligible damage to surrounding structures.
Chemotherapy entails infusion of specific drugs given intravenously to kill cancer cells. Different tumor requires different drug regimen. It can be given either pre-operatively to down size the tumor or given post-operatively to deal with micro-metastatic tumor.
In very advanced cancer and also in cases where cancer have spread to different sites of body one can offer palliative care. The intention is to treat the symptoms arising from cancer and aim at improving quality of life. It may require some form of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery just enough to reduce the pain and other symptoms.
These are special molecules which has the ability to specifically target cancer cell without causing harm to normal cells as seen during chemotherapy. They can be combined with chemotherapy to enhance cancer cure or can be given as single agent following definitive treatment.
End of life care is the extended support required at end stage of cancer where patient needs support for life mainly in terms of oxygen supply, intravenous opoid analgesic to kill excrutiating pain, feeding through ryle’s tube or feeding jejunostomy tube.
